Triathlon in Belgium Triathlon has constantly developed in the last few years in Belgium. And you can expect that with the fantastic results from Luc Van Lierde and the fact
that triathlon is becoming an Olympic sport, it can only get better. The are currently at least 3500 licensed triathletes. And you can add to that all the athletes who only compete occasionally. From Bastogne to
Oostende, there are about fifty races in Belgium each year. The most important of those are part of a circuit :
- Superprestige : the national races are grouped in the superprestige.
These are approx. eight races each year, covering all distances.
- Souper Coupe
The races vary in length and difficulty. However, most of them use the standard distances :
- sprint or promo : 0.75km, 20km, 5km
- olympic distance : 1.5km, 40km, 10km
- middle distance : 2.5km, 80km, 20km
- long (IronMan) distance : 3.8km, 180km, 42km
If you consider triathlon in Belgium on the professional level, in 1997 there were, apart from Luc Van Lierde, probably the best triathlete in the world, three semiprofessional teams. One of those is presented to you
